Magazines

A couple weeks ago in my health class, we got an assignment to research positive and negative fitness advertisements. I ended up looking at fitness magazine covers, and I was floored by all of the negative, unrealistic and revealing images there are of both men and women on the covers of magazines. Magazines shouldn’t photoshop and print pictures of men and women because they set unrealistic standards for people that can never be reached. In today’s society you see sex being advertised everywhere. Sex sells. You can see it in movies, TV shows and commercials. Now, you can even read it in magazines and chapter books. One magazine in particular that I found online had a picture of both a man and a woman standing close to each other. The man was extremely muscular and he was flexing to show off his bulging biceps and quadriceps. The woman was muscular and toned as well, and was wearing an extremely skimpy bikini bathing suit that plainly revealed her breasts and abs. Also, both the man and the woman on the front cover were tanned and photoshopped so much, that their skin was orange. They looked like living carrots. I don’t understand why magazines feel the need to go that much over the top to try and sell their products. Half the time, the people on the front cover look so unrealistically muscular that they look fake. What I also don’t understand is why people buy a magazine cover with a person on the front that is obviously photoshopped! To me, that undermines the whole entire inside of the magazine. How am I supposed to trust that this magazine is really promising workouts and healthy meals so you can look like the person on the front cover if they’re obviously photoshopped?

Another problem that I have with this particular magazine cover is that the man is half naked and so is the woman. The man has no shirt so he can flex and show off his bulging abdominals, and the woman is wearing the skimpiest bathing suit you can possibly find to show off her breasts. Many magazines use the ploy of sex to get you to buy their products. If magazines are promising models and workouts inside, people may not even read the magazine for their fitness but jut look at it for the pictures inside. Because of Photoshop, people are exposed to unrealistic sexual images. I only wish that magazines would publish their workouts and healthy meals, with a toned person that wears more clothing. Every body type is different, and not everybody’s body works the same way. To be fit and healthy, doesn’t mean that you have to be super skinny or extremely muscular. One component of being healthy is loving the body that you’ve been given. People don’t have to meet the high standards of society to be healthy because we are all different, and we shouldn’t have to set our goals to be the same as muscular, orange people.

Beauty Creating
Throughout this semester I have really enjoyed making the various meals and snacks every couple of weeks. Beauty Creating ties in with my passion project because I get to apply the techniques I’ve learned from cooking various dishes and keep on using them to make more. It has been super fun learning new techniques and I look forward to keep on cooking and to reflect God’s image in whatever I make.

Servant Working
This semester of creating meals has also been about Servant Working. It was fun to cook for my family and let my mom relax in the evenings and not have to worry about cooking for our family of 5. God calls us to serve others and making and serving meals is something that I love to do and reflects God’s imaged at the same time.

Rice for Life

I really enjoy making making rice because rice is fantastic!! In this quick meal, I brought a pan of water to a boil and then added rice and turned the heat down to low so the rice would cook slowly. While the rice was cooking, I chopped up red and green peepers, and some celery to fry up and then add to the rice once it is cooked.

For the meat portion, I fried up some sausage. It’s super easy and quick. By putting a little bit of margarine or cooking oil in a pan you stir your thinly cut sausage until it is cooked (6-8 minutes).

Rice is super good for you. It provides fast energy, can increase metabolism and reduce high blood pressure. The link to the site about more health benefits of rice is:

Banana-Chocolate Chip Baked Oatmeal

If you’ve never had baked oatmeal… eat it. Get up right now, go and follow this simple recipe and make your tastebuds happy. This simple recipe has been a favourite of mine for a long time. I first had it at camp when I was in grade 3, and then had it every year at camp after that. I finally decided to make it for myself! This particular food can be eaten for breakfast or can even be served to company for a dessert😊. With the oven set at 375 degrees, you combine the following ingredients:

2 C old fashioned rolled oats

1 C milk(I prefer almond milk)

1 C mashed bananas

1 tsp baking powder

¼ tsp sea salt

1 tsp cinnamon

¼ C honey or pure maple syrup

½ C chocolate chips

There’s no specific order to combine these ingredients you just have to mix them well! The recipe says to put the oatmeal in the oven for 35-38 minutes, and after precisely 35 minutes, my oatmeal was baked perfectly!

Before you bake your oatmeal you can always add in chopped walnuts or dried fruit (optional of course). This breakfast/dessert is healthy and is low in sugar, perfect for a breakfast or just a light, healthy snack:)

Slow

I realize I have been lacking in blog posts. I’ve been quite busy lately and now that I have more free time and sports are over, I can have more time to cook or bake. Nothing is up this weekend and I plan on making a healthy dessert:) Hope to post again soon!

Stuffed Bell-Peppers!

This meal was super fun to make and it’s extremely healthy! On top of that, it’s a super easy meal to prepare and it’s very filling!

The ingredients include:

Large bell peppers (1 each for however many people you are serving)

Ground beef

Rice

Diced up tomatoes, celery, onions and carrots

Monterrey cheddar cheese

Chicken (only if desired)
To start off you boil a pot of water and cut of the top of your peppers, hollow them out (including seeds) and boil them in the water for as long as desired. Once boiled, you can place the peppers on a plate upside down so that they drain out.

In the mean time you can dice up all of your vegetables and shred as much cheese as you like. Also at this time you can add one cup of rice to one cup of water and slowly cook your rice until it is soft (15-20 minutes).

Next you start cooking your ground beef over medium heat and start frying up your vegetables in about a tablespoon of vegetable oil. At this time I added many different spices (some of which I don’t even know the name of) to my vegetables. But the basics like salt, pepper and seasoning salt can add a lot of flavour!

Once your ground beef, rice, and vegetables have been cooked you can add them altoghrtrr in a pot and mix them. Now is the time to fill your peppers and serve them! Enjoy!

Note: I’ve made this meal twice and the second time I added in left over chicken, it is not mandatory. If anything it may just make the meal a little bit more filling.

Starting Simple

I decided to start simple and make a snack to get more comfortable in the kitchen. I started my project by making cinnamon tortilla chips. These chips simply consist of wraps that are cut into quarters, sprinkled with cinnamon, and spread out evenly (not overlapping) on a cookie sheet.

Fact: Cinnamon helps to lower blood-sugar in diabetic people, says Health News

With the oven set at 475 degrees F, you pop them in for 8-10 minutes or until they’re golden-brown. The “salsa” for these chips consists of diced up fruit. I chose to use strawberries and kiwis, but any fruit like blueberries can be added too. The link below has more information if you’d like to check it out. Stay tuned if you’d like to see more food:)

Introduction to my Passion Project🍴

My passion project idea came quite easily to me. I’ve always wanted to start cooking more meals but have never been motivated to do so. For my passion project, I will be cooking a healthy snack or a healthy meal at least once every two weeks, but hopefully more often! My mentor is my mom because she is always around to help me out if I need it, and moms also have a good track record at being great cooks. I hope to continue cooking/baking after my passion project is over so I can get into healthy cooking habits. Stay tuned 🙂
